Straight answers to what owners ask before they request a visit, from model plates to induction messages to how a visit works. If your question is not here, the contact page tells you how to ask.
About the service
We repair La Cornue ranges (Château and CornuFé, in gas, dual fuel and induction), rangetops, the ovens of those ranges, induction cooktop modules and CornuFé range hoods. The five repair services are listed on the services page.
The technician diagnoses the fault first and then gives you a written estimate for the repair. Nothing is repaired until you approve that estimate, so you decide whether to go ahead once you know what is wrong.
It is usually behind a lower door or drawer, on the frame behind the oven door, under the front edge of the cooktop, or behind the hood filters. Our guide to finding your La Cornue model number walks through each spot. A photo of the plate is enough.
Parts for these appliances are brand-specific, and many ranges were produced in small numbers. The complete designation tells the technician which series, width and fuel type to expect so the right parts and tools come on the first visit.
Cooktop, oven and gas questions
Make sure the burner cap and head are seated correctly and dry, and wipe the cap if food has dried on it. Confirm the gas shut-off valve is open. If the clicking continues without a flame, stop and request a visit. The burner will not light article covers the likely causes.
Leave the house at once, do not switch anything on or off, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not try to find the leak yourself. Once the supply is declared safe, request a visit and the technician will check the connections. See when a La Cornue range smells of gas.
Check that the oven is actually switched on, the breaker has not tripped for a dual fuel or electric model, and the door closes fully with the gasket in good shape. If those are fine, the fault could be in the igniter, the safety valve, the thermostat or a heating element. Read about an oven that is not heating or book oven repair.
Induction, hoods and installation
We cover five of them: E, E2, Er followed by a number, U and U400. For example, U means no pan is detected or the pan is unsuitable for induction, and E2 means the electronics ran too hot. The full list lives in the error codes section, and the article on induction error codes shows how to read the display.
Check the pan first: a pan that is unsuitable or off-centre can stop the zone from starting. Then read and write down any code on the display and try one controlled power reset at the breaker. If the zone is still dead, induction cooktop repair is the next step.
A clogged filter is the most common reason and is safe for you to clean. Beyond that, a blower, a duct run or the power supply could be at fault. Our article on a noisy or weak hood explains how the pieces work together.
Yes. Whether the range runs on natural gas or propane is one of the first things the technician checks, because the supply, the regulator and the burner setup all have to match. Mention the fuel when you request a visit.
Many La Cornue ranges are kept for decades, and enamel, trim and cast parts can be looked after for a long time. The technician explains what is failing and why in the written estimate, and the choice stays with you. Our article on installation checks, La Cornue range installation checks, helps you spot installation problems that mimic a faulty appliance.
Scheduling and approval
San Francisco and the wider Bay Area: the Peninsula, Marin, the East Bay, the South Bay and the Napa and Sonoma valleys. See the locations index for the complete list.
We take requests Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Requests that arrive after hours are picked up when the next day starts.
Yes. Many requests come from house managers, designers and builders. Include the owner’s name for the visit, access details such as gate codes or parking, and a contact who can approve the written estimate.
No. The first step is diagnosis. After that you receive a written estimate, and the technician proceeds only when you approve it.
If the problem is a single burner that will not light, the other burners may be fine to use as you normally would. If you smell gas, see sparks or notice burning, stop using the range, switch it off at the breaker and wait for the visit. When in doubt, leave it off.
