About this model

Model overview

The Château Grand Palais 180 range is the largest range in our Château G4 listing, at 70 7/8 inches wide. A range of that width rarely arrives by accident. It is usually the anchor that a whole kitchen was drawn around, which is why a fault on it gets noticed immediately and why we treat the visit as a careful diagnosis rather than a quick swap of parts.

What sets a range this wide apart

Size changes the service picture in practical ways. A long cooking surface means a longer run of gas plumbing under the top, more control knobs and valves to check, and an oven cavity area that has to be reached across a lot of cabinetry. In Pacific Heights townhouses and Marin hillside homes the range often sits in a niche with very little spare room on either side, so we plan access before we plan the repair.

Weight matters as well. A range of this scale is set on a levelled floor, and a contractor may have built a dedicated base or plinth for it. If the unit has been nudged during a remodel, the oven door can stop closing evenly and burners can sit slightly out of true. We look at how the range sits before blaming a component.

Complaints we are asked about most

  • One or more burners that click but do not light, or light and then drop out.
  • An oven that heats unevenly, takes long to come up, or does not heat at all.
  • An oven door that no longer seals well against its gasket.
  • Control knobs that feel stiff, loose or slow to return.
  • A faint gas odor near the range, which is handled as a safety matter first.

If the odor is gas, leave the house, avoid light switches, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not wait for us. For a burning smell or sparks, switch the range off at the breaker.

Checks you can safely make first

Confirm the gas shut-off valve behind or beside the range is open, and that the breaker feeding the range has not tripped. Make sure each burner cap and head is seated and dry, since a cap sitting off-centre is a common reason a flame will not stay lit. Close the oven door fully and look for a gasket that has flattened or come loose. Then stop. Panels, fittings and wiring behind the range are for a technician.

Having the plate ready

Parts for a La Cornue are specific to the model, so the full model and serial plate speeds everything up. It is usually behind a lower door or drawer, or on the frame behind the oven door. A photo of it sent with your request helps us bring the right items. Our wider look at the series sits on the La Cornue ranges page, and the matching top is described on the Château Grand Palais 180 cooktop page.
