La Cornue Hood Fan Not Working: Troubleshooting Steps That Make Sense

Your La Cornue range hood fan will not start, stops after a minute or runs on only some speeds. Learn the safe checks and what a technician looks at on a hood blower.

La Cornue Hood Fan Not Working: Troubleshooting Steps That Make Sense

Begin with what you hear and see

A hood that does nothing at all is a different case from a hood whose lights work but whose fan will not turn, and both differ from a fan that hums without spinning. Pressing each control and watching what happens narrows the field before you touch anything. If the lights respond but the blower does not, power is reaching the hood and the fault sits in the fan circuit or the blower itself. If nothing responds, look at the hood’s own supply first.

The usual suspects

  • No power to the hood. A tripped breaker or a switched-off wall switch is the quickest explanation. Hoods are often on their own circuit, separate from the range, so a working range tells you nothing about the hood.
  • A control that no longer sends the signal. Touch panels and switches can fail or lose their connection, leaving a healthy fan with no instruction to run.
  • A failed blower motor. The motor may be worn, seized by dust and grease, or have lost its its starting assistance. A hum with no rotation is the classic sign.
  • Obstructed or jammed wheel. Grease, a loose fastener or a deformed blower wheel can lock the motor or make it stall.
  • A protection cut-out. Some blower motors shut down when they overheat, then run again once they cool.
  • A damper stuck closed. On ducted hoods, a back-draft damper that sticks shut can strain the blower and make it cut out.

Outside checks, in order

  1. Find the circuit breaker feeding the hood and confirm it is on. If it has tripped, reset it once.
  2. Check any dedicated wall switch for the hood and make sure it is on.
  3. Try every speed, and try the lights on their own, so you know which functions work.
  4. Look at the filters from below; if they are heavily clogged or seated wrongly, remove them, clean them following the care instructions and refit them. A badly seated filter can interfere with the hood’s airflow and noise, though it rarely stops a fan dead.
  5. Switch the hood off at the breaker for a short while, restore power and try again. This is the one controlled reset worth making.

If the hood still does not run, stop there. The next steps involve the cabinet and electrical enclosure on the hood, and those are for a technician.

What not to do

Do not climb on the range to reach into the hood, remove the liner or reach behind the filters. Do not splice wiring or bypass a switch to force the blower on. And never run a hood that smells of burning or makes grinding noises; switch it off at the breaker. Because a La Cornue range often sits beneath a hood that is a visible feature of the kitchen, the temptation to tinker with it for appearance’s sake is strong. Resist it, especially on finished brass, chrome or nickel parts, where a slip leaves a mark that cannot be polished out.

Why the hood matters beyond comfort

A hood that does not run lets heat, steam and cooking by-products build up around a high-output range. For gas ranges in particular, ventilation is part of the installation, and a dead hood is a reason to cook more lightly until it is fixed. Open a window, keep burner use modest and do not leave a pot of oil unattended. If you smell gas at any point, leave the home, avoid switches and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

How installation shapes the diagnosis

In Bay Area houses, the hood duct run can be long, with several bends, running through hillside walls or between floors. Make-up air is sometimes an afterthought in older properties that have been sealed up during remodels. Either can make a perfectly healthy blower labour or trip its protection. A technician checks the supply to the hood, the control, the blower and the duct damper, and asks whether the fault appeared after construction work or a change to the range.

Preparing for the visit

Write down the hood name or model, such as Euclid, Marquee, Cascade, Loge or one of the CornuFé 90 and 110 hoods, and look for the model and serial plate, which is usually behind the filters. You can read about the Euclid, Marquee and Cascade pages, or see the post on finding your model number. When you book, describe which functions still work, whether the hood hums, and whether the problem is new. A visit starts with a diagnosis, you receive a written estimate, and nothing is repaired without your approval.

Full details are on our La Cornue range hood repair page, and the range hood guide shows the lineup. If the noise or weak airflow is your bigger concern, see hood noisy or weak.

If the hood is part of a larger cooking setup

On some installations the hood is wired or interlocked with other equipment in the kitchen, and a fault elsewhere can leave the hood inactive. If the hood stopped working at the same moment as another appliance, or just after electrical work, mention it. It often shortens the search, because a shared circuit or a disturbed connection becomes the first thing to examine.

Also note whether the hood stopped suddenly or slowed over weeks. A fan that gradually weakened before failing suggests wear in the motor or a build-up of grease on the wheel; one that stopped in an instant suggests supply, a control or a protection device.
