La Cornue Range Hoods

The hoods above the range: weak extraction, noise and dead lights, and how to tell them from a duct or supply problem.

At a glance

Overview

A hood is easy to forget until a kitchen fills with steam, and with a powerful French range underneath the hood has real work to do. La Cornue’s matching hoods sit above the range as part of the design, so when one underperforms the whole kitchen shows it. Below you will find which hoods we service and how to start narrowing a problem.

The hoods on our list

The CornuFé hood family includes four named styles, Euclid, Marquee, Cascade and Loge, each available in 36″ or 44″ widths. There are also two dedicated hoods sized to match the ranges: the CornuFé 90 Hood at 35.4″ and the CornuFé 110 Hood at 43.3″. Their individual pages are La Cornue Euclid hood repair, Marquee hood repair, Cascade hood repair, Loge hood repair, CornuFé 90 hood repair and CornuFé 110 hood repair.

Where to look for the plate

On a hood, the model information is usually behind the filters or inside the canopy once the filters are slid out. Take the filters out gently, note the label and put the filters back after you have a photograph.

Three families of problems

The blower is silent or weak

When the fan will not run, a technician follows the supply first, then the switch or control, then the blower motor and its capacitor. A fan that runs but moves little air is a different case: grease-loaded filters, a restricted duct or a damper that sticks closed all reduce airflow. Our articles on hood fan not working and hood noisy or weak go through them.

Lights not working

Often a bulb or its holder, occasionally the control. See hood lights and filters.

Vibration and noise

A rattle may mean loose mounting, an unbalanced blower wheel or a duct that is flexing. A scrape points to something touching the blower housing, and that should be inspected before the hood is used again.

Installation details that decide the outcome

A hood is only as good as its duct run. Long or many-bend ducts, an undersized duct, or a roof or wall cap clogged with debris reduce extraction regardless of the blower. In tightly sealed Bay Area remodels, a lack of make-up air can make the hood sound strained and pull poorly. The hood also needs its own power supply, and the height and width over the range affect how well it captures steam.

Owner checks

  • Confirm the hood is getting power at its breaker.
  • Clean the filters according to the usual method for your style, and let them dry fully.
  • Look for visible loosening of the filter or canopy.
  • Listen to the fan at each speed and write down what you hear.

Never open the housing or reach into the blower. If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or the hood shakes noticeably, switch it off at the breaker and stop using it.

What a visit looks at

On arrival the technician first listens to the hood and watches how it behaves at each speed, then confirms the supply and the control, and only then inspects the blower, the damper and the first stretch of duct that can be reached. Because ducts in houses of this kind often run through finished ceilings and walls, a full inspection of the run is not always possible, so we explain what was and was not checked in the written estimate. If a part has to be ordered, the model plate is what lets us order the right one, since hood parts are brand-specific and a close-looking part can be wrong for your canopy.

Next step

If cleaning and power checks do not help, request a visit via La Cornue range hood repair. We diagnose first, give a written estimate and carry out nothing without your approval. A hood over a CornuFé range pairs with La Cornue ranges, so it helps to mention both models when booking.
