La Cornue Rangetops

For owners whose Château cooktop module is set into a counter, with its own gas supply and a hood above.

At a glance

Overview

A rangetop is the cooking surface without the oven underneath, built into the counter and often paired with wall ovens elsewhere in the kitchen. In houses around Atherton, Sea Cliff or Sonoma the cooktop is frequently the piece that gets daily use, so a burner that hesitates is noticed immediately. This guide explains what is in the Château cooktop lineup and how to approach a problem with one.

Cooktop modules we service

All of the cooktops on our list belong to the Château G4 series and follow the same width-based naming as the ranges. The sizes are:

  • Château Grand Palais 180 cooktop, 70 7/8″
  • Château 165 cooktop, 65″
  • Château 150 cooktop, 59″
  • Château 135 WD cooktop, 53 1/8″
  • Château 120 cooktop, 47 1/4″
  • Château 90 cooktop, 35 1/2″
  • Château 75 cooktop, 29 1/2″

Each has a page with the details we hold: for instance La Cornue Château 120 cooktop repair and La Cornue Château 75 cooktop repair. If you are not certain whether yours is a cooktop or the cooktop section of a full range, look for an oven door below it. If there is one, the range pages are the better fit.

Why a plate matters more on a cooktop

Cooktops are cut into the counter, and once the surface is installed the label can be hard to see. The plate is usually along the front edge, on the underside of the module or inside the cabinet directly below. If you cannot reach it, a photograph of the surface layout, the number of burners and the width of the cutout helps us narrow it down, though the plate itself is what lets us match the parts.

Complaints that bring people to us

Burner problems

The common ones are a burner that does not ignite, one that clicks long after it should have lit, and a flame that is yellow, lifting or uneven. Technicians look at the igniter, the spark module, the burner head and cap, the port openings and the gas supply to that burner. Moisture and boiled-over food are frequent culprits, but a wet cap is a very different repair from a failed spark module. Pages on burners that will not light and yellow or uneven flames go through the sequence.

Knobs and valves

If a knob feels loose, stiff or does not give the usual click, the valve behind it needs attention. See La Cornue rangetop knobs and valves. Please do not pull the knob and reach behind it.

Simmer plate and French top

Where the source for a given model lists a simmer plate or French top, uneven heat across it is worth describing carefully. Our note on the simmer plate and French top explains what technicians check.

Installation details that change the diagnosis

A rangetop depends on a gas line sized and regulated correctly for the number of burners, and on a hood that clears fumes without pulling the flame sideways. In older Bay Area homes with retrofitted gas lines, supply pressure and conversion between natural gas and propane are things we ask about. Likewise, the counter material and the gap around the module affect how heat and spills collect near the burner bases.

Checks you can do from the outside

  1. Make sure the gas shut-off valve for the cooktop is in its open position.
  2. Remove each burner cap, let it dry fully and set it back so it sits flat and seated.
  3. Confirm the burner head is seated under the cap.
  4. Check the breaker that feeds the ignition.
  5. Write down which burners are affected and what happens.

Please stop using the cooktop if a burner will not shut off, if you see sparks, or if you smell gas. In the case of gas, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
