About this model

Model overview

The narrow rangetop of the Château series

The Château 75 cooktop is the compact rangetop in the Château G4 series, 29 1/2 inches wide, with the 75 giving the width in centimetres. It has no oven, which keeps the conversation on the surface. It is a current model, grouped with La Cornue rangetops, and our repair work for it falls under La Cornue rangetop repair.

Narrow cooktops tend to appear in galley kitchens, islands in small flats, and second kitchens in larger houses. With so little surface, one failed burner is a larger share of the whole than it would be on a wide unit.

What goes wrong, and what it often means

A burner that clicks but never lights usually has a wet or misaligned cap, or an igniter that has been soaked. Flames that lift or flicker point to a head that is not seated, or to residue in the ports. If a knob feels different, the valve behind it may be sticky. Sometimes a rattling noise comes from a loose trim piece, not from the gas side at all. We separate these before suggesting parts, because they lead to very different bills of work, and the written estimate reflects only what we found.

Small cooktop, shared cabinet

A narrow cooktop is often placed above a drawer stack or a slim cabinet, where the gas line and igniter wiring have to share space with storage. Items pushed to the back can press on the connector. In older San Francisco buildings, a valve that was fitted for a different appliance may now be in an odd spot. Before service, clear the space below the unit so the technician can see the supply and the wiring route.

Do these yourself, nothing more

  • Allow the cooktop to cool, then lift the caps and heads and dry them thoroughly.
  • Brush debris away from the burner ports with something soft, not a pin or a blade.
  • Set each cap down flat and test one burner at a time.
  • Look at the breaker and the gas valve handle.
  • Photograph the burner that fails.

Smell gas, and you leave, avoid switches, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. A burning smell or sparks means turning the breaker off.

Sizing it up against the others

Its larger sibling is the Château 90 cooktop, and the Château 75 range shares the width but has an oven. For the precise identity of your unit, find the plate usually located under the front edge of the cooktop. If you cannot locate it, our guide on finding the model number helps.
